Emergency System for Advance Registration of Volunteer Health Professionals (ESAR-VHP).

This federal program, administered by the NJ Department of Health, verifies health professionals' identification and credentials so that they can respond more quickly when disaster strikes. By registering through ESAR-VHP, volunteers' identities, licenses, credentials, accreditations, and hospital privileges are all verified in advance, saving valuable time in emergency situations. You must hold a valid medical license to participate in this program. This is a statewide program with the option to participate in federal engagements.

Medical Reserve Corps (MRC).

The NJ Medical Reserve Corps consists of 23 MRC Units managed by local health departments and each county in New Jersey has at least one unit. Volunteers who sign up for service in the NJ MRC will select the MRC unit they wish to join and have the option to volunteer locally, statewide, or at the federal level. MRC health professional volunteers include nurses, pharmacists, EMTs, doctors, counselors, social workers, and veterinarians. MRC community health volunteers provide services such as language translation/interpretation, education and outreach, hospitality, food services, reception, logistics, security, and assistance to individuals with disabilities, access and functional needs.

This portal provides a centralized online registration and communication system for all of NJ's MRC units and its statewide ESAR-VHP program. The main difference between these volunteer programs is that the ESAR-VHP program is for licensed medical professionals only and is administered at the state level. These volunteers may be called to serve at hospitals in times of need. Those who sign up for ESAR-VHP may also choose to join the MRC program and be part of a local MRC unit. MRC units are administered locally and are generally serve the local community.
